3 Things They Don’t Tell You When Planning a Trip to Tropea

Tropea is a popular summer holiday destination for locals, who often visit family or enjoy the region’s stunning beaches. If you’ve seen Tropea all over your social media feeds recently, it’s no surprise why – it has become a sought-after location for travellers looking for off-the-beaten-path experiences, away from crowded spots like the Amalfi Coast. However, what you might see online doesn’t always reflect the reality of visiting Tropea, and careful planning is essential. Here are three things they don’t tell you when planning your trip to Tropea and how our local insider team can assist you.
1. Public Transport Is Not Reliable

Le Castella, a village in Calabria
While buses, trains, and taxis are available in Tropea, exploring the more remote areas of Calabria may not be ideal using public transport. Costs can accumulate as it may take up to an hour or more to reach other parts of the region. Although self-driving is an option, navigating and parking in Calabria can be challenging and is not always recommended. Some of the roads are also not in good condition and it is better to have a local guide you.
With Ormina Tours, you can gain insider access to Calabria and utilise our drivers to take you beyond Tropea to discover breathtaking medieval castles, rock-carved churches, and charming villages that may be typically inaccessible via public transport.
2. English is Limited in the Region

Tropea and the surrounding region of Calabria are primarily known to locals, which means the town is not heavily catered to tourists. This means that you will have an amazingly authentic experience. However, you may encounter a language barrier when dining at restaurants or communicating with local taxi drivers. On the other hand, this also means you’ll avoid tourist traps and have the opportunity to savour authentic regional delicacies, such as Tropea’s famous red onions and Calabrian chilli peppers.

3. Tropea’s Beach – Not The Most Accessible

Tropea boasts one of Italy’s most beautiful beaches, a highlight of the Coast of the Gods, which is said to have been discovered by Hercules. This clifftop village is famous for its turquoise waters and soft white sands. However, the beach is located below the clifftop, making it difficult for travellers with mobility issues to access. Reaching the beach requires navigating a considerable number of steps.

Fortunately, the Coast of the Gods (which includes Tropea) offers a variety of stunning and accessible beaches along the Tyrrhenian Sea in Calabria. Our Calabria Private Tailored Itinerary includes not only leisure time to explore the town of Tropea butalso offers access to beautiful beaches, including Capo Vaticano (well known for its snorkeling), Marina Grande Beach, and Ricardi del Spiaggi.
