About St. John's Co-Cathedral
Malta
St. John’s Co-Cathedral was originally built by the Knights of St. John between 1573 and 1578, and it was dedicated to St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the Knights. The exterior of St. John’s Co-Cathedral is relatively modest compared to its lavish interior. It features a simple façade, with an entrance that leads into a cloistered courtyard. Once inside, you are immediately struck by the opulence and grandeur of the cathedral’s Baroque interior. Every surface is elaborately decorated, with stunning frescoes, intricate marble floors and gilded altars. Perhaps the most famous aspect of St. John’s Co-Cathedral is the series of masterpieces by the renowned Italian artist Caravaggio, who lived in Malta for a brief period, including The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Jerome Writing. St. John’s Co-Cathedral also serves as the final resting place for several Grand Masters of the Knights of St. John with tombs and memorials marked by ornate stone carvings and epitaphs.
