About National Museum of Archaeology
Malta
The National Museum of Archaeology was established in 1958 to preserve and display the wealth of artifacts discovered in Malta and its neighbouring islands. The museum’s collection includes prehistoric artifacts, tools, pottery, tombs and jewellery, with a focus on the islands’ ancient inhabitants and their early history. The exhibits offer an in-depth look at the cultural evolution of Malta, from its earliest settlers to the civilizations that shaped its history. Located in the Auberge de Provence, the 16th-century building housing the museum was originally constructed as the residence of the Provençal Knights with intricate stonework and grand staircases. Although the museum is primarily focused on ancient history, it also has exhibits covering the Medieval period and the Knights of St. John, who ruled Malta from the 16th to the 18th centuries. This section features armour, weapons and religious artifacts, reflecting the Knights’ influence on Malta’s cultural and military history.
