About Dubrovnik Cathedral
Croatia
The Dubrovnik Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was built in the late 17th century after the previous Romanesque cathedral was destroyed in the 1667 earthquake. Designed by Italian architects in the Baroque style, with a grand façade, large dome, and elegant interiors, the cathedral houses a rich treasury featuring gold and silver reliquaries, many adorned with intricate craftsmanship. The most famous relic is a portion of the skull of St. Blaise, Dubrovnik’s patron saint, encased in a gold-plated reliquary, and the main altar features a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary attributed to Titian, a renowned Renaissance artist. Dubrovnik Cathedral is an active place of worship, hosting daily Mass and special events.
