For atmosphere, August’s Aste Nagusia festival fills the streets, though it draws larger crowds. Pack for the sirimiri, the city’s fine drizzle.

Two to three days is enough to take in Bilbao’s main districts at a relaxed pace. Allow longer if you’d like to add day trips, to San Sebastián for its beaches, or into the Rioja wine country an hour to the south.
