The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is one of the most iconic modern art museums in the world, and it’s a must-see for anyone traveling to Bilbao. Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the museum is an architectural masterpiece that has transformed the city’s skyline and its reputation as a cultural hub. Even if you’re not a huge art fan, the museum’s stunning design is worth the visit on its own. Gehry’s design is nothing short of mesmerizing, with the museum itself resembling a sculpture. Flowing curves, reflective surfaces, and innovative use of materials make the building a work of art. Outside is the famous Puppy sculpture by Jeff Koons, a colourful flower-covered dog that greets you at the entrance, and the futuristic Maman by renowned artist Louise Bourgeois is a massive bronze, stainless steel and marble sculpture of a spider, standing 9.5 metres high. The Guggenheim Bilbao was a major factor in the regeneration of the city’s industrial waterfront, and was designed to resemble a ship, in homage to Bilbao’s history as a port city. Inside you’ll find an impressive range of contemporary art, with works by Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Mark Rothko, and Richard Serra, among many others.
