Known as the ‘Hanging Bridge’, the Vizcaya Bridge in Getxo, near Bilbao, has been a World Heritage-listed site since 2006. The iconic suspension bridge offers a unique experience as it carries both vehicles and pedestrians across the Nervión River via a gondola suspended beneath its upper platform. The Vizcaya Bridge is a remarkable feat of engineering, as it is the oldest and longest bridge of its kind in the world, completed in 1893. For those who enjoy a thrill, you can take the walkway that runs along the top of the bridge, rising to about 50 metres above the river. The view from the top is breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the Basque coastline and Bilbao.Known as the ‘Hanging Bridge” the Vizcaya Bridge (Puente de Vizcaya) in Getxo has been a World Heritage Listed Site since 2006 and can be reached by a 20-minute metro ride from Bilbao. The unique conveyor bridge takes vehicles and pedestrians from one side to the other on its gondola suspended below the upper platform. For lovers of heights, you can climb to the top (around 50 metres) where you can cross the bridge via a wooden walkway.
