About San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
Basque Country
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a striking and picturesque island located off the rugged Basque Coast near Bermeo, making it one of the most iconic landmarks in the region. The island is connected to the mainland by a stone bridge with a zig-zagging walkway, which leads visitors up to the small hermitage dedicated to John the Baptist. This unique location gained worldwide attention as the filming site for Dragonstone in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, where it served as the ancestral seat of House Targaryen. The climb to the hermitage involves 241 steps, and the effort (allow 1 – 1.5 hours) is rewarded with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding cliffs. The journey is challenging but manageable for most visitors, and the spectacular panorama makes it a memorable experience. If you prefer a more relaxed visit, several secluded viewpoints around the area provide incredible overviews of the island and coastline.
