About San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
Basque Country
One of the Basque Country’s most spectacular coastal sights, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a tiny rocky islet connected to the mainland by a dramatic stone bridge and a winding staircase of 241 steps leading to a small chapel at the summit. The setting feels almost otherworldly, with the Cantabrian Sea crashing against the cliffs below.
The chapel is dedicated to St John the Baptist, and according to tradition visitors should ring its bell three times after reaching the top and make a wish. The site has medieval origins and was historically an important defensive and religious point on the Basque coast; its dramatic appearance later brought it international attention as a filming location for Game of Thrones. The surrounding landscape is equally impressive, making this one of the strongest “wow” experiences in the region.
