Teatro Margherita
Art nouveau building, once a cinema and theatre, now an exhibition space for contemporary art
About Teatro Margherita
Bari
Perched over the Adriatic Sea in Bari’s old port, Teatro Margherita is one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks. Built between 1912 and 1914, the theatre was ingeniously constructed on stilts to get around a legal agreement that prevented new theatres from being built on city land—unless they were over water. This Art Nouveau building replaced the original wooden Varietà Margherita, which tragically burned down just a year after opening. Today, Teatro Margherita holds the title of being the only theatre in Europe built over the sea, making it a true architectural rarity. Though it no longer stages traditional performances, the building has found new life as a centre for contemporary art, hosting exhibitions and cultural events that reflect Bari’s evolving creative spirit.
