Basilica di San Nicola
Significant pilgrimage site with Romanesque architecture and important mosaics
About Basilica di San Nicola
Bari
The Pontifical Basilica of Saint Nicholas holds great religious significance across Europe and the Christian world. A major pilgrimage destination for both Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians, it is especially known for housing the relics of Saint Nicholas, the beloved bishop of Myra. The basilica was constructed between 1087 and 1197 during the Italo-Norman period, a time when Bari was under Norman control, following the decline of the Byzantine Empire in the region. Architecturally, the basilica is a prime example of Romanesque style, featuring a grand façade and intricate design elements. Inside, admire significant artworks, including mosaic pavements in the crypt and presbytery, which highlight the basilica’s artistic heritage. One of the most remarkable features is the cathedra, or bishop’s throne, crafted in the late 11th century for Elias, showcasing some of the finest sculptural works in southern Italy.
