About Museo del Succorpo della Cattedrale di Bari
Bari
The Museo del Succorpo della Cattedrale di Bari is an underground archaeological site beneath the Cattedrale di San Sabino. One of its most remarkable features is a well-preserved section of a Roman decumanus, a main road with visible wheel ruts left by carts. The site also houses beautiful early Christian mosaics dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries, showcasing intricate geometric patterns and Christian symbols. Layers of Byzantine and medieval structures can be seen, including the remains of an early Christian church that stood here before the present cathedral was built in the 12th century. The museum also contains sarcophagi and tombs with funerary inscriptions that offer a glimpse into the religious practices of Bari’s early Christian community.
