St. Stephen’s Cathedral
Medieval Roman Catholic place of worship with an ornate spire, catacombs and a treasury museum
About St. Stephen's Cathedral
Austria
The gothic-style with elements of romanesque and baroque architecture looms over the city with an elaborate mosaic-covered roof and towering spires. St. Stephen’s Cathedral is famous for its large bells, especially the Pummerin, which is one of the largest church bells in Europe. The cathedral’s South Tower rises to a height of 136 meters and is the tallest church tower in Vienna. Climb the 343 steps to the top for a spectacular view of the city. The cathedral’s roof is another striking feature, covered with coloured tiles arranged in intricate patterns. The roof’s main design includes the double-headed eagle, the symbol of the Habsburgs, and the coat of arms of the city of Vienna. The roof’s vivid green, yellow, and brown tiles create a beautiful contrast against the cathedral’s dark stone walls. St Stephen’s boasts an impressive collection of stained-glass windows, many of which depict scenes from the Bible, saints, and important figures in church history. Beneath the cathedral lies the catacombs, a network of underground chambers that have been used as burial places for centuries. The catacombs contain the remains of bishops, archbishops, and other notable figures from Vienna’s history.
