About St Paul's Catacombs
Malta
Located just outside the ancient city of Mdina, St. Paul’s Catacombs are among the most significant archaeological sites in Malta. The catacombs feature an array of tombs and burial niches cut into the soft limestone, and some of the chambers still bear faint traces of early Christian frescoes depicting biblical scenes, symbols, and religious motifs. Inscriptions in Latin and Greek, as well as Christian symbols such as the chi-rho and fish, can be found on the walls and tombs, offering further insights into the religious practices of the time. With its intricate burial chambers, early Christian artwork, and the tranquil atmosphere of the underground tunnels, the catacombs are an essential destination for history and archaeology enthusiasts. Not recommended for those who uffer from claustrophobia.
