Inquisitor’s Palace
Seat of the Maltese inquisition for 200 years now features restored rooms and museum exhibit
About Inquisitor's Palace
Malta
The Inquisitor’s Palace is a fine example of Renaissance architecture, with its grand facade, inner courtyards, and impressive stonework. The building features elegant halls and rooms, including the Inquisitor’s private chambers, a chapel, and the trial rooms. The interior is meticulously preserved, with original furnishings, artworks, and decorations providing a glimpse into the life of the Inquisitors and the environment in which the trials were held. One of the most chilling aspects of the Inquisitor’s Palace is the torture chamber located in the basement. The torture chamber exhibits various instruments of torture that were used during this period, giving a sombre insight into the darker side of the Inquisition’s operations. A significant feature of the Inquisitor’s Palace is its chapel, featuring baroque altar pieces and paintings that showcase the importance of religion in the lives of both the Inquisitors and the people of Malta.
