About Domus Romana (Roman Villa)
Malta
The Domus Romana dates to the 1st century BCE and provides a glimpse into Roman Malta before it became part of the Roman Empire. The villa once belonged to a wealthy Roman family and offers a window into the domestic and cultural life of that time and is renowned for its beautiful mosaic floors, some of which are still largely intact. These intricate mosaics depict scenes from Roman mythology, animals, and daily life, showcasing the artistic and cultural sophistication of the period. The remains of the villa include several rooms with large columns, some still standing, and remnants of the original walls. The Domus Romana is one of the few well-preserved Roman sites on the island and offers a deeper understanding of how the Romans lived, worked, and played in Malta during their rule.
