About Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum
Malta
The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is one of Malta’s most extraordinary archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient underground complex, dating back to around 4000 BCE, served as a prehistoric burial site and sanctuary, offering a glimpse into the advanced practices of Malta’s earliest inhabitants. Its three levels – the upper, middle, and lower chambers – demonstrate the advanced architectural skills of the Neolithic period. The Main Chamber features intricate carvings and architectural elements that mirror those of Malta’s megalithic temples. Believed to have been both a burial site and a temple, the Hypogeum provides insights into the spiritual and ritualistic practices of Malta’s prehistoric society. It is estimated that over 7,000 individuals were buried here.
