About Hadrian's Villa (Villa Adriana)
Italy
Villa Adriana, also known as Hadrian’s Villa, is a sprawling Roman archaeological complex located in Tivoli, just outside of Rome. Built in the 2nd century AD by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a luxurious retreat from the demands of Rome, this grand villa is one of the most significant and well-preserved examples of ancient Roman architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Villa Adriana is a vast complex with more than 30 buildings, including palaces, temples, theatres, bathhouses and libraries. Some of the most remarkable aspects of the villa are the well-preserved mosaic floors, which showcase intricate designs and vibrant colours. The design of the villa blends traditional Roman architecture with influences from Greek, Egyptian, and other Eastern cultures, and the villa is surrounded by beautiful gardens, with fountains, pools, and flowerbeds, demonstrating Hadrian’s love for nature.
