Bridge of San Francesco (Ponte di San Francesco)
Medieval bridge over the Aniene River
About Bridge of San Francesco (Ponte di San Francesco)
Caltagirone
The Ponte di San Francesco, or Bridge of Saint Francis, is a medieval segmental arch bridge that spans the Aniene River in Subiaco. Built in 1358, the bridge is notable for its single graceful arch, which stretches 37 metres (121 feet) across the river. It reflects the engineering skill of the Middle Ages and has endured for centuries as both a functional structure and a historical landmark in a region closely associated with Saint Francis of Assisi and early monasticism.
