Aragonese Castle of Otranto (Castello Aragonese)
Historic fortress built in the 15th century by Ferdinand I of Aragon
About Aragonese Castle of Otranto (Castello Aragonese)
Italy
The Aragonese Castle of Otranto has a rich history dating back to its initial construction by the Normans in the 11th century. The present structure, however, was heavily modified by the Aragonese in the 15th century, particularly under Ferdinand I. The castle played a significant role in defending the town of Otranto, especially after the Ottoman invasion of 1480, when the town was besieged, and many of its inhabitants were martyred. The castle’s defensive role was critical during various invasions and conflicts over the centuries. Architecturally, the castle features bastions, tower fortifications, and a moat to protect against sieges. Inside, visitors can explore its various rooms, which now house a collection of historical artifacts, and enjoy the panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea from its terraces.
