Hidden Places in Switzerland: Villages, Mountains and Experiences Most Travellers Miss
Image: My Switzerland TourismMany travellers visit Switzerland for its famous alpine icons. Destinations like Jungfraujoch or luxury resorts such as St. Moritz often appear at the top of travel wish lists. However, beyond these well-known destinations lies another side of the country. In fact, many of the most memorable hidden places in Switzerland are small villages, quiet mountains and historic towns that reveal the nation’s authentic character.
When you explore with Ormina Tours, these lesser-known destinations often become the most rewarding part of the journey. It allows you to explore these hidden places at your own pace, giving you deeper cultural insight and more meaningful experiences. Here are several hidden places in Switzerland that offer a deeper look into the country’s landscapes, traditions and culture.
Hidden Places in Switzerland Near Geneva
Just a short drive or train ride from Geneva, you can step into medieval villages, wander vineyard landscapes, and taste the flavours of local life.
Gruyères – A Storybook Medieval Village
Image: My Switzerland TourismThe hilltop village of Gruyères feels like stepping into a fairytale. The town is famous for its traditional cheese production and cobbled streets. Here, you can learn how Gruyère cheese is made. You can also walk up to Gruyères Castle, which overlooks the surrounding countryside.
The journey from Geneva takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes by train and bus.
Broc
Chocolate Train - Image from My Switzerland TourismA little further on, Broc invites you to discover Swiss chocolate at Maison Cailler. Tasting and learning about chocolate here makes for a perfect half-day or combined trip with Gruyères. We recommend taking the Chocolate Train. This vintage-style scenic train runs from Montreux to Broc (Maison Cailler chocolate factory) and the Gruyères cheese region. It’s one of Switzerland’s iconic themed rail journeys offering views of vineyards and countryside.
Nyon

Closer to Geneva, the lakeside town of Nyon offers Roman history and vineyard views. Explore the hilltop Nyon Castle, stroll the waterfront promenade and sample local wines from nearby La Côte vineyards.
Trains reach Nyon from Geneva in just 15 minutes. Regular regional trains from Geneva to Nyon are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

Hidden Mountain Landscapes Worth Discovering
Switzerland’s mountains are world famous. However, many travellers head straight to the busiest alpine resorts. Instead, these quieter landscapes offer spectacular scenery with fewer crowds. We recommend visiting here instead:
Mount Rigi
Often called the “Queen of the Mountains,” Rigi can be reached via a historic cogwheel train from Arth-Goldau or by boat and rail across Lake Lucerne. From the summit, you’ll be treated to alpine lakes and peaks stretching as far as the eye can see. Cogwheel Railway (Rigi Bahn) from Vitznau or Arth‑Goldau up Mount Rigi is a classic scenic rail experience with panoramic lake and mountain views.
Swiss Travel Pass: The cogwheel railway and associated trains/boats (for example, from Lucerne to Vitznau) are fully covered with your pass — no extra ticket needed.
What to do
- Ride the historic mountain railway
- Walk panoramic hiking trails
- Enjoy lunch at Alpine restaurants with a view
When to visit
Summer offers excellent hiking conditions. However, autumn brings colourful landscapes and fewer visitors.

Perched above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Mürren is a peaceful, car-free village. Cable cars make access easy, and once there, you can hike, visit mountain huts, or ride to Schilthorn for breathtaking scenery.
To get to Mürren, you’ll typically use the Lauterbrunnen–Mürren rail link (train plus cable car sections, often Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen‑Mürren), which is scenic and part of the regional network. The Swiss Travel Pass covers regular trains to Lauterbrunnen.
From Lauterbrunnen, many of the mountain cable cars and final sections to Schilthorn or Birg may be discounted but often require a separate fare or regional pass.
What to do
- Walk panoramic trails overlooking the Alps
- Visit traditional mountain huts
- Experience the cable car to Schilthorn
When to visit
Summer and autumn are ideal for hiking. Winter brings quiet skiing and dramatic snowy scenery.

How to get there:
Voralpen Express – A scenic interregional train connecting St. Gallen with Lucerne, passing through pre‑Alpine landscapes, lakes, and rolling countryside. It’s less tourist‑focused but offers continuously scenic views between these regions.
Swiss Travel Pass: Regular service on the Voralpen Express is fully covered with the STP, and no reservation is typically required. Regional trains from St. Gallen to Appenzell are also part of the regular rail network and covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.
Appenzell

Just 40 minutes from St. Gallen, Appenzell invites you to admire hand-painted houses, visit the lively town square, and taste the famous Appenzeller cheese.

Hagenwill Castle

Nestled in Thurgau, Hagenwil Castle is one of the few intact water castles in Switzerland, dating back to 1264. Surrounded by a moat and set within tranquil farmland, it offers a rare glimpse into medieval life and architecture. To get there, take a train to Rorschach or Amriswil. Both stops are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. You can then enjoy a short local bus ride or scenic walk to the castle.
With Ormina Tours, you can include these heritage treasures in your itinerary. Combine them with storybook villages, alpine escapes, and cultural highlights. Whether you prefer a small-group journey or a private adventure, we design each route around your pace and interests. Every detail is tailored to your style, making your Switzerland experience truly personal and unforgettable.
