Teatro Petruzzelli
Ornate theater dating to 1904, hosting classic opera, dance and classical concerts
About Teatro Petruzzelli
Bari
Teatro Petruzzelli is Bari’s largest theatre and the 4th largest in Italy. Completed in 1903, it was originally designed as an opera house and concert hall. Over the years, it has hosted world-renowned performers like Luciano Pavarotti, Rudolf Nureyev, Ray Charles, Liza Minnelli, and Frank Sinatra. Tragically, in 1991, the theatre was destroyed by a fire caused by arson. Since the building was not insured, it was reconstructed using public funds, meticulously restoring its original design, including the iconic five tiers of boxes and dazzling decorations. The theatre reopened in 2009 with a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony by the Orchestra of the Province of Bari, marking a triumphant return to cultural life.
