About St Mark's Campanile (Campanile di San Marco)
Italy
The St. Mark’s Campanile is the tallest bell tower in Venice, standing at 98.6 metres in St Mark’s Square. Originally built in the 9th century and reconstructed after collapsing in 1902, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of Venice and the lagoon. The tower features five bells, each with a historic function, and a golden statue of the Archangel Gabriel at its peak. An observation deck at the top offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Venice, its canals, the lagoon, and even the distant Dolomites on a clear day. In 1609, Galileo Galilei demonstrated his telescope from the top of the tower to Venetian leaders.
