Founded in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries, Montserrat Abbey is renowned for its stunning natural setting and cultural significance. It is home to the revered statue of La Moreneta (the Black Madonna), which attracts pilgrims from around the world. The abbey complex includes a basilica, museum and library with an extensive collection of religious and historical texts. The basilica, with its Neo-Romanesque facade, features a richly decorated interior and a beautiful altar where the statue of La Moreneta is enshrined, as well as housing works by artists such as Caravaggio, El Greco, and Picasso, as well as artifacts from ancient Egypt and the Middle East. Montserrat Abbey is also known for its boys’ choir, the Escolania de Montserrat, one of the oldest and most renowned in Europe.
