About Saint Domnius Cathedral
Croatia
The Cathedral of Saint Domnius is one of the oldest and best-preserved early Christian churches in the world. Originally built in the 4th century as the mausoleum of Roman Emperor Diocletian, the structure was later converted into a cathedral in the 7th century. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Domnius, the patron saint of Split, who was martyred during Diocletian’s persecution of Christians. The cathedral’s architectural style is a blend of Roman, medieval, and Christian influences, with its Corinthian columns and intricate carvings. The cathedral’s bell tower, added in the 13th century, stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks in Split, offering stunning views over the city and the Adriatic Sea for those who climb it. Inside, the stone altar, marble columns, and beautiful mosaics reflect the cathedral’s rich history. The wooden doors of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius are one of its most notable features. Crafted in the 13th century by the renowned artist Andrija Buvina, the doors are a masterpiece of medieval craftsmanship. They are made from oak and are adorned with intricate carvings that depict scenes from the Bible, including biblical figures and stories. Another of its impressive features is its crypt, where Saint Domnius’ relics are kept.
