Diocletian’s Palace is a massive Roman palace complex built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century AD as both a luxurious retirement residence and a military fortress. The UNESCO World Heritage Site which covers an area of over 30,000 square metres, was originally surrounded by high walls and fortified towers, blending imperial grandeur with defensive architecture. Over the centuries, the palace became the heart of Split, with medieval buildings, homes, shops, and restaurants incorporated into its ancient Roman structures. Today, it remains a living historical site, where people still reside within its walls, making it one of the best-preserved Roman architectural complexes in the world. Some of its most famous landmarks include the Peristyle courtyard, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, originally Diocletian’s mausoleum, the subterranean basements, and the Golden Gate, one of the four grand entrances. The palace also features remarkably preserved columns, temples, and sphinxes imported from Egypt. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Diocletian’s Palace is a stunning blend of Roman, medieval, and modern architecture, attracting visitors from around the world who explore its historic alleyways, lively squares and ancient ruins.
