About Reina Sofía Museum (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía)
Madrid
The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía is Spain’s national museum of 20th- and 21st-century art, located in Madrid. It is one of the most important modern art museums in the world, alongside the Prado Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, forming Madrid’s “Golden Triangle of Art.” The museum’s most famous piece, Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, is a masterpiece that depicts the horrors of the Spanish Civil War. Joan Miró’s surrealist and abstract works add a unique dimension to the collection, and the museum also features photography, sculptures, and installations by artists such as Man Ray, Francis Bacon, and Diego Rivera. Originally a hospital (Hospital de San Carlos) from the 18th century, the building was transformed into a museum in 1990 featuring glass elevators and a modern extension by architect Jean Nouvel.
