About Rabelo Boat Cruise
Porto
A rabelo boat is a traditional wooden vessel once used to transport barrels of Port wine down the Douro River. These boats played a crucial role in the wine trade, carrying barrels from the vineyards of the Douro Valley to the aging cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, across from Porto. With their flat-bottomed design and long steering oar, rabelos were built to navigate the Douro’s strong currents and shallow waters. While they originally relied on sails and manpower, today they are equipped with engines and used primarily for tourism.
