Dom Luiz I Bridge
Arched bridge carrying low-level road and a high-level metro line between Porto and Vila Nove de Gaia
About Dom Luiz I Bridge
Porto
The Dom Luís I Bridge is one of Porto’s most iconic landmarks, connecting the city of Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro River. Completed in 1886, the bridge was designed by the engineer Teófilo Seyrig, a student of Gustave Eiffel (designer of the Eiffel Tower). The bridge features two levels: the upper level, used for cars and pedestrians, offers spectacular views of Porto and the river, while the lower level is dedicated to trains. The iron structure of the bridge, with its arch span and ornate details, makes it an architectural marvel. It has become one of the most photographed sites in Porto, offering stunning views of the city’s historic centre, the riverfront, and the Dom Luís I Bridge from both sides. Walking across the bridge fabulous breathtaking panoramic views of the river and Porto’s historic Ribeira district.
