About Plitvice Lakes National Park
Croatia
Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a breathtaking natural wonder famous for its turquoise lakes, cascading waterfalls, and travertine formations. Over thousands of years, the waters flowing over limestone and chalk have created travertine barriers, forming a unique network of 16 interconnected lakes and countless smaller waterfalls. The park’s lush forests are home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, lynxes, and rare bird species such as eagles and owls. Covering nearly 300 square kilometres, Plitvice offers a network of wooden walkways and hiking trails, allowing visitors to explore its pristine landscapes up close. The changing seasons add to its charm, with lush greenery in summer, golden foliage in autumn, and a magical frozen landscape in winter. The crystal-clear waters of the lakes reflect different shades of blue and green, depending on the minerals and sunlight, creating a surreal atmosphere.
