About Lecce Cathedral (Duomo di Lecce or Catedral de la Asunción de Santa María)
Italy
The Lecce Cathedral is a magnificent Baroque-style church located in the heart of Lecce. The cathedral was originally built in the 12th century in a Romanesque style, but extensive renovations and a Baroque makeover occurred in the 17th century, particularly under the direction of the architect Giovanni Andrea Lardet. The cathedral’s stunning façade is adorned with intricate carvings of biblical figures, saints, and other religious symbols, all created from the local Lecce stone. The design of the church incorporates both Baroque elegance and Renaissance elements, with a harmonious combination of light, space, and dramatic architectural features. Inside, the cathedral features a beautiful altar, frescoes, and sculptures, including works by the renowned artist Francesco Solimena. The chapels are richly decorated, and the baroque interior creates a feeling of awe and reverence. The bell tower of the cathedral stands tall next to the structure, offering panoramic views of Lecce’s historic centre.
