About Como Cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta - Duomo di Como)
Como
Como Cathedral is a magnificent cathedral located in the heart of Como near the shores of Lake Como. Dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is widely considered one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic-Renaissance architecture in the region. Construction began in 1396 and continued for nearly four centuries, resulting in a harmonious blend of styles from late Gothic to early Baroque. The façade, completed in the 15th century, features finely detailed sculptures and rose windows, while the interior is adorned with richly decorated altars, tapestries, and artworks, including paintings by Bernardino Luini, a follower of Leonardo da Vinci. The impressive dome, added in the 18th century by Filippo Juvarra, dominates the city skyline and enhances the cathedral’s grandeur. Just steps from the lakefront and the city’s main square, the cathedral is a central landmark and a serene place to admire centuries of religious art and architecture.
