About Cathedral of St Andrew Apostle (Duomo di Sant'Andrea Apostolo)
Amalfi
The Cathedral of St. Andrew the Apostle is a significant Roman Catholic cathedral located in the heart of Amalfi, Italy. Dating to 987 AD, the cathedral has undergone several renovations, blending Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Arab-Norman architectural styles. Its façade is a striking example of medieval design, with intricate mosaics and a grand staircase leading to the entrance. Inside, the cathedral boasts a richly decorated interior, featuring a coffered ceiling, a 13th-century wooden crucifix, and a triumphal arch supported by majestic Egyptian granite columns. The crypt houses the relics of Saint Andrew, brought to Amalfi from Constantinople in 1208. Adjacent to the cathedral is the Cloister of Paradise (Chiostro del Paradiso), a peaceful courtyard with medieval murals, which is now part of the Museo Diocesano, showcasing religious artefacts. The cathedral remains an important place of worship and a historical landmark in Amalfi, admired for its architectural beauty and spiritual significance.
