Basilica di San Martino
Rococo-style church with a sculpted façade, marble altars and notable artwork
About Basilica di San Martino
Italy
The Basilica of Martina Franca is a significant architectural and religious landmark in the town. Its construction, completed between 1747 and 1767, showcases the influence of Rococo style, especially evident in the elaborately decorated facade. The 37-metre-high façade is divided horizontally into two levels, with vertical bands of pilasters adorned with intricate capitals. The portal, featuring high-relief sculptures of Saint Martin sharing his cloak with the poor, highlights the church’s religious and social significance. Inside, the basilica is equally impressive, with rich marble altars that enhance the sacred space. One notable feature is the pulpit, finely carved by Domenico Semeraro, displaying craftsmanship typical of the period. Additionally, the Last Supper painting by Carella is an important artwork that adds to the church’s artistic value.
