Burgos
The Atapuerca Archaeological Site is a significant prehistoric site located in northern Spain, near the town of Atapuerca in the province of Burgos. It is famous for its exceptionally well-preserved fossilized remains of early humans and prehistoric fauna. The site has provided some of the earliest evidence of human evolution, with discoveries dating back over 1.2 million years. Notable finds include fossils of Homo antecessor, an early human species, as well as tools and animal remains that shed light on the behaviour and environment of early humans. The site consists of several caves, such as the Sima de los Huesos (Pit of Bones), which is particularly important for its large collection of Neanderthal bones. Atapuerca is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its immense contribution to our understanding of human prehistory.
