Arc di Triomphe
Iconic triumphal arch built to commemorate Napoleon’s victories, with an observation deck
About Arc di Triomphe
France
The Arc de Triomphe is a monumental triumphal arch located at the top of the Champs-Élysées in Paris, commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte after his victory at Austerlitz in 1805 to honour the French army. Completed in 1836, the arch stands 50 metres tall and 45 metres wide, making it one of the largest in the world. It features relief sculptures that depict key moments in French military history, and beneath it lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, symbolising the sacrifice of all who died in World War I. You can climb to the top of the arch for panoramic views of the city, including a spectacular view down the Champs-Élysées towards the Place de la Concorde and the Eiffel Tower. The Arc de Triomphe is a national monument, and every year, a ceremony is held on Bastille Day, and the flame of the Unknown Soldier is rekindled to honour France’s fallen soldiers.
