About Gurten
Bern
Berne’s home mountain, the Gurten, offers year-round attractions for visitors, hikers, and families beyond its famous festival days. Accessible via the Gurtenbahn funicular railway from Waben, the ride in its iconic red carriages takes just a few minutes to reach the 858 m summit. From the observation tower, guests enjoy sweeping views of the Aare River, the city of Bern, the Mittelland, the Jura, and, on clear days, the Alps. Historically used as a golf course until 1959, the Gurten fields now provide free access with barbecue spots, family-friendly activities including a miniature railway with steam locomotives, climbing frames, frisbee, and bowling. In winter, when snow conditions allow, visitors can enjoy a toboggan run to the Grünenboden middle station and a miniature ski lift on the Gurten fields, making it a versatile destination for all seasons.
