Sainte Chappelle
Ornate, 13th-century, Gothic chapel with relics and notable stained-glass windows of biblical scenes
About Sainte Chappelle
France
Sainte-Chapelle is a stunning Gothic chapel tucked within the medieval Palais de la Cité on the Île de la Cité in Paris, built in the 13th century by King Louis IX to house precious Christian relics, including what was believed to be Christ’s Crown of Thorns. Though modest in size, it is famous for its extraordinary stained glass windows, which soar nearly 15 metres high and depict over 1,100 biblical scenes in vivid detail and colour. Bathed in multicoloured light on a sunny day, the upper chapel feels ethereal, like stepping into a jewel box of glass and stone. Despite damage during the French Revolution, it has been meticulously restored and remains one of the finest examples of Rayonnant Gothic architecture, cherished for both its spiritual significance and artistic brilliance.
