About Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Chain Bridge)
Budapest
The Chain Bridge is one of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks and the first permanent bridge to connect Buda and Pest across the Danube River. Opened in 1849, it was the vision of Count István Széchenyi and was designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark, with construction overseen by Scottish engineer Adam Clark. At the time, it was considered a modern engineering marvel and played a crucial role in unifying the two halves of the city. The bridge is supported by massive stone lion statues at each end and features cast-iron chains from which it gets its name. Today, the Chain Bridge remains a symbol of Budapest, offering stunning views of landmarks such as the Parliament Building, Buda Castle, and the Danube, especially when illuminated at night.
