About Malaga Cathedral (Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación de Málaga)
Costa del Sol
The Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación de Málaga, commonly known as Málaga Cathedral, is an iconic Renaissance-style cathedral located in the heart of Málaga’s historic centre. Construction of the cathedral began in the early 16th century and continued for over 200 years, with completion in the 18th century. The magnificent athedral is renowned for its impressive architecture, featuring a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. It has a grand façade, a magnificent interior with soaring columns, and beautiful chapels. One of its most notable features is its unfinished south tower, which has earned it the nickname “La Manquita” (the one-armed lady) due to its lack of a second tower. Inside, the cathedral houses a stunning collection of artwork, including works by prominent Spanish artists, and the altar area is particularly grand. The building also has a peaceful cloister and a lovely patio, which enhances its serene atmosphere.
