About Gibralfaro Castle
Costa del Sol
Gibralfaro Castle is a historic fortress located on a hilltop overlooking Málaga the city, Mediterranean Sea, and the Alcazaba. The castle was built in the 14th century by the Nasrid dynasty, primarily to strengthen the defenses of the nearby Alcazaba during the time of Muslim rule in Spain. The name “Gibralfaro” is derived from the Arabic word “Jabal-Faro,” meaning “Mountain of the Lighthouse,” due to its location being close to the site of an ancient lighthouse. The castle was expanded and fortified in the following centuries and has played a role in various historical events, including during the Christian Reconquista. Today, Gibralfaro Castle is a popular attraction, with its well-preserved walls, towers, and battlements offering the chance to explore its history and enjoy stunning views. A walk from the Alcazaba to the castle is a pleasant experience, and the climb is rewarded with one of the best vantage points in Málaga.
