About Teatro Antico di Taormina
Italy
Teatro Antico di Taormina, or Ancient Theatre of Taormina, is an impressive archaeological site located in the picturesque town of Taormina, Sicily. Built in the 3rd century BC by the Greeks and later expanded by the Romans, the theatre originally seated around 10,000 people. The Romans altered the theatre’s design, transforming the orchestra into an arena and removing the stage. Its semi-circular structure was a significant advancement in ancient theatre design. One of the theatre’s most striking features is its location. The seating area offers stunning panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna, making it a breathtaking setting for performances. Today, the theatre hosts a variety of events, including the Taormina Film Festival, concerts, and theatrical performances.
