Süleymaniye Mosque
Ottoman Grandeur Overlooking the Golden Horn
About Süleymaniye Mosque
Istanbul
Commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and completed in 1557 by the master architect Mimar Sinan, the Süleymaniye Mosque is an icon of Ottoman architecture and spirituality. Its harmonious design, massive dome, and tranquil courtyard create a space of awe and serenity. Perched on one of Istanbul’s seven hills, the mosque complex once included schools, a hospital, and baths, embodying the grandeur of a self-sufficient civic centre. It’s still an active place of worship, welcoming visitors to experience its cultural and architectural richness.
