Sassi di Matera
Prehistoric cave dwellings atop a ravine overlooking the Torrente Gravina tributary
About Sassi di Matera
Basilicata
The Sassi di Matera are ancient cave dwellings carved into the soft limestone of the Murgia plateau in southern Italy. These unique structures, located in the town of Matera in the Basilicata region, date back to prehistoric times, with evidence of habitation as far back as the Paleolithic period. The Sassi consists of two districts, Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, where houses, churches, and even entire complexes were carved into the rock. The area is famous for its labyrinth of narrow alleys, stairways, and cave homes, many of which have been restored and converted into hotels, restaurants, and museums. In 1993, the Sassi di Matera was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance and unique architecture. It also gained international attention as a filming location for movies such as The Passion of the Christ.
