About Roman Theatre (Teatro Romano)
Italy
Lecce’s Roman Theatre dates to the 2nd century AD and is located near the city’s historic centre, at the foot of the Piazza Sant’Oronzo. The theatre was originally built during the Roman Empire and was used for public performances, including plays, comedies, and other spectacles. The structure could hold approximately 25,000 spectators and was originally designed in a semicircular shape, with stone seating and a stage area. Over time, the theatre was buried under centuries of development, and it wasn’t rediscovered until 1901. Excavations revealed parts of the seating, stage, and auditorium, along with decorative elements such as columns, carvings, and mosaics.
