About Porta Torre
Como
Porta Torre is one of the most striking and historically significant landmarks in Como. Built in 1192 as part of the city’s medieval defensive walls, it served as the main southern gate to the town and a powerful symbol of Como’s independence and strength during the Middle Ages. The massive stone structure stands about 40 metres tall and is an excellent example of Romanesque military architecture, featuring thick walls, narrow windows, and a series of open arches on the upper levels that were likely used for defence and surveillance. Despite its military origins, Porta Torre has a certain elegance, with its symmetry and imposing presence anchoring the nearby Piazza Vittoria. Over the centuries, it has remained remarkably well-preserved and today offers a vivid glimpse into Como’s medieval past, standing in sharp contrast to the modern shops and streets that surround it.
