Restored museum exploring Malta’s military history through artifacts and exhibits
About National War Museum - Fort St Elmo
Malta
Housed in the Fort St. Elmo, the National War Museum is an essential stop for history enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into the island’s involvement in key historical conflicts, from the Knights of St. John to World War II and beyond. One of the key themes of the museum is the Great Siege of 1565, a pivotal event in Malta’s history. The museum displays an extensive collection of artifacts related to this siege, which saw the Knights of St. John defend Malta against the Ottoman Empire. Another major section of the National War Museum focuses on Malta’s involvement in World War II, housing an extensive collection of wartime memorabilia, including uniforms, medals, and photographs from the period. One of the most interesting pieces at the museum is the George Cross Medal which was given to the whole population of Malta in 1942 as recognition for their bravery during the war. This cross now features on the Maltese flag.
