About Fort St Angelo
Malta
Perched at the tip of the Vittoriosa (Birgu) Peninsula, Fort St. Angelo was originally built as a medieval castle, before being expanded and fortified by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century, transforming it into an impenetrable stronghold. During the Great Siege of 1565, Fort St. Angelo served as the command centre for the Knights, led by Grand Master Jean de Valette, as they defended Malta against the Ottoman Empire. Explore the fort’s massive bastions, gateways and courtyards, which showcase impressive military engineering, and learn about the heroic defence during the Great Siege through multimedia displays, artifacts and exhibits.
