Monte San Salvatore
Landmark peak with a mountaintop village with scenic lake views, hiking trails and cable car
About Monte San Salvatore
Lugano
Monte San Salvatore, often called Lugano’s “Sugarloaf,” rises 912 metres above the lake and offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in southern Switzerland. From the summit, you can see the city of Lugano, Lake Lugano winding into Italy, the vast Po Valley, and the distant peaks of the Swiss and Savoy Alps. Reaching the top is quick and scenic thanks to the historic funicular railway from Paradiso, which has been carrying passengers since 1890 and still runs regularly from spring to autumn. Once at the summit, you’ll find a small museum set in a former chapel, featuring exhibitions on religious art, geology and the mountain’s role in scientific research. Well-marked hiking trails begin here too, leading through forests and along ridges to charming villages like Carona and Morcote. For a relaxing break, the Ristorante Vetta serves Mediterranean dishes on its panoramic terrace. With its mix of natural beauty, history, and outdoor adventure, Monte San Salvatore is a highlight of any visit to the Lugano region.
