About Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper and Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie
Italy
The Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie is a historic church and former Dominican convent in Milan, known worldwide as the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. Construction of the church began in 1463, featuring a blend of Gothic and early Renaissance architecture. Later, the renowned architect Donato Bramante contributed to its design, adding the elegant dome and cloister that reflect the ideals of the Renaissance. What makes the basilica truly iconic is the mural by Leonardo, painted between 1495 and 1497 on the wall of the convent’s dining hall. The Last Supper is considered one of the most significant achievements in Western art, capturing the moment Jesus announces his betrayal with unprecedented emotion and realism. Entry to see The Last Supper is tightly controlled to protect the fragile artwork, and advance reservations are absolutely essential.
